Text Box: Text Box: The elder son of Lala Amarnath, Surinder was a skilful left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm medium-pace bowler. In 1963-64 he made his debut for Punjab while still a schoolboy. In 1972-73 he hit 202 not out for Punjab against Delhi in Ranji Trophy and in the same season made his unofficial Test debut against Sri Lanka scoring 118 at Ahmedabad. On his first appearance in an official Test, he scored 124 against New Zealand at Auckland in 1975-76. That season he also toured the West Indies, playing in two of the Tests. A neat, wristy left-hander with aggressive instincts, he cover-drove and cut particularly well and it was surprising that he never maintained a regular place in the Indian team having stiffened up the batting against England in 1976-77. He was injured during the 1977-78 Australian tour and had to return home. His last Test was played in Pakistan in 1978-79, but he was unlucky not to be picked for the next tour of Australia in 1979-80, after scoring 235 not out against the Rest of India for Delhi in the Irani Trophy.
