As an under 19 player he took 9 wickets in the match against Bangladesh in the Junior World Cup. A reincarnation of Kapil Dev was surfacing and he looked the answer to India's problem of all-rounder. He made his debut memorable when in his very first international over, he took a hat-trick against Pakistan. His was among the dropped after the World Cup disaster, but with the Twenty20 format the selectors were looking for youth and Irfan found himself on the plane to South Africa and he did not disappoint.
