Text Box: Although under average height, Datta Gaekwad possessed a sure defense and delightful crisp strokes, especially through the covers. He was a right-handed batsman of quiet efficiency. An occasional leg-break bowler, he was also an agile and fearless fielder. He toured England in 1952 and 1959, and West Indies in 1952-53, and at home played against Pakistan in 1952-53 and 1960-61 and West Indies in 1958-59. When he was captain on his second England tour and he scored 1,174 runs at 34.52. His career-highest was 249 not out against Maharashtra in 1959-60. In the Ranji Trophy competition from 1947 to 1961, he made 3,139 runs at 47.56 an outing, including 14 centuries. He is the father of Anshuman Gaekwad.
