Text Box: The son of the former Indian captain, D.K.Gaekwad, Anshuman was a tall, bespectacled right-handed batsman with plenty of guts and determination, a fine fielder in the gully and an occasional off-break bowler, good enough to take 6 for 49 against Saurashtra in 1971-72. A charming, gentle character, he was full of strokes in his youth but the stern demands of Test cricket took much of the gaiety out of his batting and he became a steady player. He made his first-class debut for Baroda in 1969-70 and became captain in 1975. An innings of 155 against Maharashtra in 1973-74 helped his selection for India against West Indies the following season when he made 80 at Madras in his second Test. In 1976-77, after making 173 runs in three home Tests against New Zealand (43.25), he could not get going against the England fast bowlers, but in 1978-79, playing once as an opener and three other Tests lower in the order, he scored 393 runs at 41.85 an outing against the West Indies at home, including his first Test century of 102 at Kanpur. He could not maintain this form in England in 1979. A prolific 1982-83 season earned him a Test recall. He could make only two Test fifties on the tour of West Indies, but at Jalandhar in 1983-84 he made 201 out of 374 in India’s first innings, India’s first double hundred against Pakistan. It took him 652 minutes and 426 balls, then the seventh-longest Test innings. He was in the National Selection Committee from 1992-93 to 1995-96 and Coach to the Indian team from 1997-1999 and was again called in 2000.
