Text Box: A descendant of the royal family of Baroda, he was in fact often called ‘Baroda’, Fatehsinhrao bought a genuine love for the game to his playing days, to his stints in commentary boxes and perhaps most valuably, to his role as the manager of the national team. A man of gentle manner with a characteristic chuckle, he played for Baroda schools and for a few years for Baroda in Ranji Trophy. even leading them for four years. In 1959, only 29 years old, he was the manager of the Indian team to England, but thereafter his political and corporate commitments seemed to overtake him. He was a member of parliament and a minister in the state of Gujarat and did pioneering work for the World Wildlife Fund in India. But perhaps his greatest contribution to Indian cricket was his role as manager on what could have been a very tricky tour of Pakistan in 1978. India and Pakistan were resuming cricket links after 17 years, during which two wars had taken place between them. India needed a matured manager with a feel for diplomacy and Fatehsinhrao, with his charming presence and great command over Urdu, did such a fantastic job that he was called upon again in 1982-83. He died in 1988, still young and widely admired.
